“Dark Soul” by Aleksandr Voinov

I haven’t been doing as many book reviews lately, because instead of reading two books per week, I’ve been plowing my way through two entire series. One of them was “Dark Soul”.

“Dark Soul” is a compilation of five novellas. The protagonist is Stefano Marino, a mob boss. When I started reading this I thought it would be dark dark dark. But it isn’t really (or maybe I’m just jaded?). Marino is a bit of a softy, and even as he orders people to their deaths, he comes off as kinda sweet. Okay, maybe I’m twisted.

Silvio Spadaro is another matter entirely. He’s an assassin for hire, with a heart made of cold steel. Spadaro was dark and damaged. I read another book where one of the characters had his kind of personality, and I know some people with the same. They are hard to get to know, and so is Silvio. Even when you experience his POV, you never know quite what he’s thinking or feeling.

I’m not usually a big fan of most series, because I hate having cliff-hangers for endings. I also don’t like to wait for every new book to come out to find out what happens. However, this series is finished, and you can buy it all as a set (I bought it for the cost of an average-length Romance novel). I’d recommend that you do the same.

Something that was really exciting for me was the MMF scene. It was the first one I’ve read where the sex wasn’t just glossed over. It was super-hot. I heart how Voinov gives me something new every time.

The ending was happy for now, which suited the book. Sure, I love a sweet and happy ending, but I don’t need it. These kinds of stories seem to be a major theme in Voinov’s work, and I think he pulls it off well. I’ll be reading more, but I’m not sure what book of his I should start next. Any ideas?
